Driving to Perisher

Your ticket to the divine alpine is only a 6 hour drive from both Sydney and Melbourne. Travelling by car is the most convenient way to travel to the Snowy Mountains. However you do need to be prepared for ALL conditions.

DISTANCES

From Time Kms
Sydney 5.5hrs 450kms
Melbourne 6hrs 575kms
Canberra 2.5 hrs 180kms

If you are driving all the way to Perisher Valley, add another 30 minutes on to your driving time. Please be aware that there is NO overnight car parking in Perisher Valley. Some properties do offer onsite car parking, you need to book this in advance as there is a limited amount.

Driving from Sydney & Canberra

Follow the Hume Highway from Sydney then just south of Goulburn take the Federal Highway and travel south to Canberra. This section of the trip is mainly on a divided road. In Canberra follow the signs to the Monaro Highway to Cooma. This road then joins the Kosciuszko Rd that you follow through the town of Berridale and onto Jindabyne. Just past the Jindabyne township take a left onto the Alpine Way to the Ski Tube/Bullocks Flat. You will see the Skitube sign and turn off on your right just before the National Park entry gate. Alternatively you might like to drive all the way to Perisher Valley, instead of turning right on to Alpine Way you simply continue your journey on Kosciuszko Rd.

Driving from Melbourne

Follow the Hume Highway from Melbourne to Wodonga. Take the Murray Valley Highway's Wodonga/Tallangatta exit. After passing Wodonga follow the signs to Tallangatta, again on the Murray Valley Highway. You pass through the village of Koetong onto Corryong. Drive through Corryong and take the "Khancoban" turn-off on your right. Once in Khancoban you are only 76kms from Thredbo. From here the drive is truly spectacular as you take in awesome views of the Main Range and discover the beauty of the Kosciuszko National Park. The roads are clear for most of the year but when a big snowfall hits, chains are required for 2-wheel drive vehicles. Follow the Alpine Way down the mountain and turn Left on to Kosciuszko Road, continue on until you get to Perisher.

Resort Parking & Kosciuszko National Park Entry

Once in the resort you have a choice of fully serviced mountain bases to begin your day's riding. Perisher Valley offers day access by car, parking is free and for day use only. Smiggin Holes may be accessed by car, day parking is free and a free shuttle service operates between Perisher Valley and Smiggin Holes between 7:30am and 6pm (and longer during night skiing and boarding).

In NSW all 2WD vehicles are legally required to carry chains within the Kosciuszko National Park during the ski season, for 4WD/AWD vehicles it is recommended to carry chains. We recommend that chains be carried in 2WD vehicles even when it is not mandatory as conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Snow Chains can be hired from Alpine Sports
